The simulation: space and ground at once

Top left, what happens in space: the Moon’s shadow sweeping the planet. On the right, what you would see from the chosen spot, at the very same instant. Below, the map of the track. Press ▶ and all three views move on a single clock.

The path of the umbra
Path of totality Central line Umbra right now Sunset line Cities inside the path 🗺 The corner locates the view on the globe

The Earth · Moon · Sun system that day

The same eclipse seen from outside. The Moon’s position, the shadow cone and the umbral spot come from the official Besselian elements — not from approximate ephemerides — so the shadow lands exactly where it will land. Drag to rotate, scroll to zoom.

Where it goes

What will you see from where you are?

Type a city of over 20,000 people or a pair of coordinates, or click the map.

What weather to expect

How much Sun is covered, minute by minute?

Percentage of the solar disc covered at Balombo. Light does not drop noticeably until past ~85 %; then everything happens at once.

Cities inside the path of totality

Times in each city's own local time, computed one by one.

How to watch it without hurting your eyes

⚠️
Throughout the partial phase, even with a sliver of Sun left, looking without protection causes permanent retinal damage. Use only ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses. The one exception is totality: while the Sun is fully covered, and only inside the path, you can and should look with the naked eye.
